.«Imagination without discipline is chaos.»
The facts
Idea Management programs try to make a better usage of information that is already inside people’s heads, but that is undervalued either internally within front-line workers either on the supplier and partner’s network.
Nevertheless, collecting good ideas and inputs is only half of the battle. Evolving them into good concepts and valuable opportunities is the other half. Experience tells us that most suggestion/Idea Management schemes fail after about 6-18 months and that implementation is a huge problem.
Successful Idea Management needs to balance creativity with process discipline and Idea generation with good implementation rates. As such, there is a need of balancing two different, but complementary, groups of dynamics:
Governed Innovation
- Top-down, strategy driven campaigns with transversal themes, with clear champions. _________________
Continuous Innovation
– diversified bottom-up innovation that bubbles as an ad-hoc process started by employees.
That’s where other softwares fail as most of today’s idea management solutions are simply software versions of the old corporate suggestion box. They automate a process that doesn’t work. If a company is only interested in collecting employee suggestions, there are horizontal software platforms like Sharepoint that can handle that and track suggestions.
But then you find people complaining that...
-
“I’ll get lots of ideas but few that are useful”
Innovation could create a lot of noise and no actual results or returns. This generates a lot of frustration because innovation’s promise doesn’t live up to the hype.
-
“We don’t want the extra overhead”
This is because an entire staff could be needed to manage the idea flow. But without that support participants quickly become discouraged that the enterprise isn’t listening. This breeds disenchantment, and, ultimately, mass attrition.
-
“I don’t know what to do with the results”
Even the best ideas will be difficult to implement as they could work but for a different time or a different business model. The crowd proposes a fantastic idea except that prior investment decisions, existing contracts, or promises to partners make the idea impossible to implement.
-
“I can’t keep my end users engaged. At first, we had great participation but then it dropped off over time, and I couldn’t find a way to keep my employees engaged”
Sure, publicity is a motivator that works with those people who already comment on blogs, but how do you get the quiet thinkers to share ideas? Managers risk breeding cynicism if they offer cheap rewards; they face a bigger risk if they offer nothing at all.
-
“I’ve already tried SharePoint, and it doesn’t work very well”
Sharepoint is a generic, horizontal platform that needs huge customization to match your needs, resulting in significantly higher deployment costs, longer implementation times and increased levels of ongoing support. “Purpose−built” software is a better solution.
-
“My innovation process doesn’t revolve around software tools”
You can’t live without them but success, however, is much more than installing software! This is not to say that the tools don’t matter — they do. Rather, it demonstrates that deep domain expertise around idea management is also important.
Main benefits
Our solution supports the whole process after the ideas are collected, assuring their evolution and implementation. Accordingly, inputs and ideas from all employees are gathered, discussed, evolved and evaluated. This allows the evolution of raw ideas into high potential and well-defined opportunities. Then you can track implementation and even disseminate best practices to other geos and easily replicate them locally.
Specific functionalities guarantee that you can be confident to transform ideas into opportunities by:
- Gathering the maximum number of relevant ideas;
- Evolution of the ideas in 2 steps: improve the “Perceived value” and “Simplicity of the implementation model” at the same time testing the reasons why they are good or bad in our Framework (concept);
- Evaluation of concepts’ alignment against pre-defined metrics to validate their value and timing to different groups/departments/BUs, identifying a new “champion” that can implement it, transferring the ownership from the author to a new group (opportunities).
Only our solution enables you to design and implement your own Idea Management best practices, allowing quick and easy changes at any moment to the interface and to the “rules” of the game, so that it can match the right context. In addition, you can include your guidelines, create default tasks and templates, define evaluation methods and create scorecards. All these features can be customized and linked to multiple pre-defined models.
And you can enjoy simplicity at the start and sophistication only when you need it. You don’t have to use all of its capabilities at the outset. Start simply, explore new capabilities for greater levels of process maturity, according to your strategy and pace of transformation without any kind of new implementation or customization.
It solves the gaps in the Process Governance & provides ownership and control to the Business Process Manager while pleasing IT and senior management.
